How much do cremated remains weigh?
It's a common question, and a practical one: knowing roughly how much ashes weigh helps when choosing an urn, carrying an urn home or travelling. Here's a plain answer.

The short answer
An adult's cremated remains usually weigh between 3 and 9 pounds, with about 5 pounds being typical. That's roughly 3.5% of a person's body weight, though it varies from person to person.
Why the weight varies
Cremated remains are mostly bone, so the weight depends on a person's bone density and frame more than on body weight. A taller person or someone with a larger frame usually has heavier remains. Age, health and the cremation process also make a difference.
What do ashes look like?
Despite the name, cremated remains aren't soft like fireplace ash. They're processed bone fragments with a texture similar to coarse sand, usually grey to off-white.
How much do pet ashes weigh?
Pet ashes follow a similar pattern, at roughly 3.5% of the pet's body weight. A 50 lb dog's ashes, for example, typically weigh around 1.5 to 2 pounds.
Weight versus urn size
Urns are sized by volume, not weight. The common guide is one cubic inch of capacity for every pound of healthy body weight, so a 180 lb adult needs an urn of about 180 cubic inches or more. Our full-size adult urns hold around 200 cubic inches. See our guide to what size urn you need and marble cremation urns.
Carrying, shipping and travelling
A filled stone urn is heavier than the ashes alone, because natural marble and granite are dense. For air travel, the TSA allows cremated remains in carry-on bags if the container can be screened by X-ray. To travel with a portion, use a lightweight temporary container that can be screened, then transfer the ashes to a keepsake urn after arrival. In the United States, USPS is the carrier that accepts cremated remains for shipping, using its Priority Mail Express service.
