Small dog urns: a size chart by weight
Small dogs often leave the biggest hole in a home. If you're choosing an urn for a small companion, the main question is size: an urn that's slightly too large is fine, but one that's too small won't hold all of the ashes. This guide makes sizing simple.

The sizing rule
Allow about one cubic inch of urn capacity for every pound of your dog's healthy weight. Use their weight when they were well, not after an illness, and round up.
Small dog urn size chart
| Dog's weight | Example breeds | Urn capacity to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 lb | Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian | 10–15 cubic inches |
| 10–20 lb | Shih Tzu, Pug, Miniature Dachshund | 20–25 cubic inches |
| 20–30 lb | Beagle, French Bulldog, Cocker Spaniel | 30–40 cubic inches |
Breed weights vary, so use your own dog's weight rather than the breed average. Each urn's capacity is listed on its product page. See small pet urns.
Adding a collar, tag or keepsake
Many families like to place a collar, tag or a small note inside the urn. If you'd like to, choose an urn with 10–20% more capacity than your dog's weight, or keep the collar beside the urn instead.
Choosing a material
Natural marble is a popular choice for small dogs because it's substantial and lasting even in a small size, and every piece has its own veining. See marble pet urns. If you'd like to keep a portion of your dog's ashes in more than one place, a keepsake urn holds a small amount.
Sharing ashes among family
If more than one person would like to keep part of your dog's ashes, choose one main urn plus a keepsake for each person. Because a small dog's ashes are a modest amount, check the main urn still has enough room for what remains.
